Cold Snap

by Jen on January 18, 2010

We’ve been extra busy the last couple of weeks, breaking ice so that our farm animals can drink, hauling extra hay to keep them warm, building windbreak walls for our dear dairy goats, draining water lines to keep them from freezing, hauling extra wood to keep Hazel’s stove burning. . .

I know what you’re thinking.  You’re thinking, what’s so extra busy about that – that sounds like typical farm life in Wisconsin, what’s the big deal?

Um, y’all?  We’re in Atlanta, GEORGIA.  Not Wisconsin.  It’s not supposed to be this cold (below freezing) here for days on end!  We’ve got a chill!  We had an actual dusting of snow! (If you don’t already know this, the word “snow” in Atlanta is equivalent to the word “blizzard” or “hurricane” elsewhere.  Schools close and bread and milk fly off of the grocery store shelves in record time.)

Some of us layered on extra clothes,

some found a tiny piece of sun to soak in,

and some

This day was about 15f.

I was not one of the frisky ones.  I was in the shivering category (so was Hazel).
